Emergency Responders As Snoops
US firefighters being trained to spot terrorists
"Unlike police, firemen and paramedics do not need warrants to get into homes and other buildings during technical inspections of emergency facilities, making them particularly useful for spotting signs of terrorist planning.
The Homeland Security Department has been secretly testing a pilot scheme in New York in which firefighters are trained to identify suspicious material or behaviour. If successful, the programme will be extended to other large cities."
Of course this begs the questions "What, exactly, are signs of terrorist planning?" and "What. exactly, are successes?"

Sigh. I know. A sign of the times. I heard about this one last week.
Another sign of the times, according to one of Mr. N's customers, he was required to sign some statement from the bank upon taking out a mortgage loan saying he wasn't a terrorist/involved in any terrorist activities.
Unreal. Or perhaps, surreal is a better word.
