Winner In Space Elevator Competition

"The idea of a space elevator is thought to have been proposed by Arthur C. Clarke’s novel The Fountains of Paradise in 1979. In actuality, the idea’s origin extends all the way back to 1895 when a Russian scientist named Konstantin Tsiolkovsky came up with an idea for a tower that would reach into space. Well, here we are in 2009 and there is still no space elevator, but a Seattle-based company has won an award during The Space Elevator Games which demonstrates that we are on our way to developing the technology that would be the basis for a space elevator in the future."

What they need to design is a huge Eiffel tower, one that can double as a collector of ice-water (to be melted and sent down thru pipes), with an elevator or magnetic-lift directly in the center.

Such a design could be permanent and need not be detached. Of course, the size would have to be tremendous, as the base would have to be at least 20 km wide to compensate for the extreme height.
