Scientists Refind Water On Mars
They've known about flowing water on the planet for years, it's just a matter of timing as to when they tell us things like this.
"A new analysis of pictures taken by the exploration rover Opportunity reveals what appear to be small ponds of liquid water on the surface of Mars."
No kidding. NASA has known about standing water since at least Mariner 9 in 1971. The Mariner missions were the first to measure and take photos of Mars. Some of the pictures were pretty obvious:
As I recall there was a picture last year when one of the rovers looked down at it's tracks and found it was sloshing through a mud puddle, look at the lower right:
Like I said, they know a hell of a lot more than what they let on. Keeping us in the dark until they feel the need to hand out some stale crumbs is how they play this game. I'm wondering when they might start to begin to speculate to ponder whether there could be life forms on Mars.

I'd like to add that ice caps at the northern pole of Mars were seen as far back as the 1940s. It has always seemed odd to me that the so-called "search for water" on Mars has been such a big deal when ice has been seen to grow and recede with the martian seasons for quite some time.
I suppose the question I thought everyone was asking was if there was any water elsewhere, besides in the form of ice at the poles.

You bet Nick - dogmatic science was derailed a long time ago. Empirical evidence hods no sway - Percival Lovell was right all along.
