El Presidente Goes South

Deciderer has left on a six day trip to South America for photo ops and an attempt to make nice in a region that's exploding with anti american sentiment. I guess it's common knowledge that lame ducks usually flee the country and find it more comfortable abroad because of weakness back home, but seriously, doesn't he risk the arrest and prosecution as a war criminal?

Exemplifying the feelings of most of latin america, Argentina's president Kirchner "spread a welcome mat for (Venezuela president Hugo) Chavez to hold an anti-Bush rally in a Buenos Aires stadium the same day that Bush will be visiting Uruguay, across the Rio de la Plata." Aside from Uruguay the massive entourage will stop in Brazil, Colombia, Guatemala and Mexico. Only Columbia can be considered a true neofascist buddy; I would assume they'll get stiff and formal receptions elsewhere and plenty of demonstrations. Think of the disruptions when this act rolls into town:

"Bush’s entourage will include over 400 advisers, diplomats, and security advisers, and the group will transit the region using six planes, 12 armored busses and U.S. Army helicopters. Bush will also be guarded by thousands of local police and armed forces in each of the countries he visits, culminating with over 20,000 Colombian soldiers and police officers who will guard him during his four hour stop in Bogotá."

One wonders if a small delegation will be sent over to check up on Bush's purported land purchase in Paraguay. Wasn't South America a favored destination of nazis fleeing war crimes charges after WW2? Interesting that a massive semi - secret US base is close to that land sale.

This could be an interesting trip to keep an eye on. Things can happen that will broadside a trip like this even with the most careful planning. As the El Mercurio of Santiago, put it:

This is the biggest Latin American trip of Bush's presidency. Expectations for the trip:
Poor.

I agree that the President's trip should have poor expectations. I like how you point out all the security that will be involved following him around. He almost makes more of a problem with the security than good with his negotiations and speeches.
