Cop Over Reaction Gets Comical

Drunken driver bumps into squad cars

"A drunken driver cruising in slow motion after being stopped repeatedly by police ended up ramming his car into two Dane County squad cars before being forcibly removed by officers from his car and taken to jail, the Dane County Sheriff's Office reported.

David Gilmore, 56, of Milwaukee, was arrested on tentative charges of operating while intoxicated, eluding and resisting arrest, according to a news release from the Sheriff's Office.

Cross Plains police answered a call at about 8:25 p.m. Saturday from a citizen who observed a seemingly confused man wandering in the 1100 block of Main Street who eventually found his way to his 1996 Mercury Villager and began driving.

"A Cross Plains officer quickly found the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop," said spokeswoman Elise Schaffer. "Gilmore pulled over and came to a stop, but before the officer got out of his squad, Gilmore made a u-turn and slowly drove away."

Speeds reached up to 10 miles per hour in the "chase," Schaffer said.

"The officer continued to follow Gilmore, who pulled over at least three more times, but drove away each time," Schaffer said.

Sheriff's deputies came to assist, trapping Gilmore on the dead end of Westview Court. Road spikes were deployed to slow down the slow car."
