Winter Weather Advisory In Summer

Snow closes part of Going-To-The-Sun road

"The snow in Great Falls and surrounding areas is likely little more than a distraction for most people, but in Glacier National Park, it's forced park officials to temporarily shut down the upper reaches of the Going-to-the-Sun Road.

The historic route is now closed between Big Bend on the west side of the park and Jackson Glacier Overlook on the east side due to the recent snow accumulation, which has made the roads unsafe according to park officials."

While snow can fall in the mountains at any time of the year this is early to close the passes. A foot dumped on me in mid june when I was hiking around Gannet Peak in Wyoming one June, and I was chased out of the high country the first week of september years ago, but that all melted. Going-To-The-Sun road is one of the most spectacular drives in the country. The wildflowers will knock your socks off most years.
