Yahoo Pretend Trends

I use Yahoo and in the last couple of years I've noticed that on the home page the portal posts what supposedly are the top search terms from whenever. Here is it's list from a few minutes ago:

If you just take a snapshot like this one or two times, nothing special about it. But if you look at it day after day you'll start to see something unusual.

For one thing we should remember that there's a war for our heads. We're being told by a 24/7 barrage of incessant propaganda not just what to think but how to think, a far more insidious thing to be sure. Mainstream media and popular culture is all about distraction, doncha know. We're supposed to pay attention to and dwell on and react to what we're told and not to think for ourselves. Plus, celebrity and sensation rule the day.

Consequently Yahoo puts up this pretend list all the time on it's home page to guide you to what you should be paying attention to, and not as a summary of recent search terms as they want you to think. There are never any questions, or abstractions, or concepts, just items for you to be paying attention to. The list is always heavy with celebrities and popular culture. Also, and this is just a guess mind you, they have a big list of names and terms to sprinkle in now and then to make it seem like a legitimate compendium.

You picked up on it! I've had the same thought several times, as I go to my Yahoo page, and, after seeing what Yahoo says are the top searches, think to myself "How odd, that after all that's going on in the news, the "top searches" would be of, (as you said,) mainly celebrities."
