Watch International Response To Haiti

'Catastrophic quake' hits Haiti

"The Caribbean nation of Haiti has been hit by its strongest earthquake in more than 25 years, causing what is being described as "a catastrophe of major proportions".
The earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.0 and a depth of 8km, and was centred about 15km west of the capital Port-au-Prince, according to the US Geological Survey.
A tsunami alert was immediately issued for Haiti, Cuba, the Bahamas and the Dominican Republic after the quake struck at 21:53 GMT on Tuesday."

This is a devastating event. The temblor was shallow, very harsh and only a few miles from the capital. Millions of people are affected.
It will be interesting to see who offers aid, how much and what kind.
After Katrina's destruction Cuba generously offered to fly over 1500 doctors and medical supplies to New Orleans. As american bodies littered the landscape and hundreds of thousands of our citizens were going without food, water and needed medicine, white house spokesflack Scott McClellan said
“When it comes to Cuba we have one message for Fidel Castro: He needs to offer the people of Cuba their freedom.”
I'd bet that Cuba will be among the first countries to offer substantial and effective aid to their neighbor.
