I've thought about that too. But then I remembered that at the time all those countries that shook off totalitarian regimes did so in their own way, completely different from each other. I remember watching each eastern bloc country, one after another, do it in a different manner. I imagine it's possible Ceausescu was targeted for elimination a la Milošević in Yugoslavia. We really only see the tip of the iceberg.
if I was in the secret services of one of the counties that allowed Ceausescu to stay in the power for so many years, I would have thought about all the future interviews (from jail, possibly) that he would have made (or books, biography, memories...) etc... Better to pay someone to execute him
