Empire Gets It's Foot In The Door, Again

Plan Columbia supposedly started around ten years ago but in essence the strategy has been a fascist agenda for much longer. Find a corrupt, autocratic government in a region the empire finds desirable or overthrow the existing government and install a cooperative puppet, buy off congress to authorize massive funding for bullshit programs and deeply embed the US military into the country's internal affairs. In other words in Columbia's case "control its valuable resources; most importantly oil and natural gas but also coal, iron ore, nickel, gold, silver, emeralds, copper and more; it's also to crush worker resistance, eliminate unions, target human rights and peasant opposition groups, and make the country a "free market" paradise inhospitable to people."

US military in Columbia is there to help the government there eradicate competition in the drug trade, not the drug trade itself. It's also there to help crush resistance movements just like it's in Afghanistan to crush the Taliban and it's opposition to record opium poppy harvests. Simply business as usual for the fascists - in the 80s Honduras and El Salvador was their base of operations for cocaine trafficking and to crush the Sandanistas in Nicaragua, a fledgling populist movement that was too much of a 'threat of a good example' to the region.

Countries in central and south america have good reason to be concerned about an empire on the move. A year ago the US Navy reestablished its 4th Fleet and southern command. Also last year Columbia invaded Ecuador with US help and killed several dozen suspected FARC members, setting the whole region on edge. So when recent talks between Columbia and the US for an escalation in "drug interdiction" became known south american countries voiced protest, because they're not fools down there. They know the US wants to move vast amounts of it's military into the nation to more directly supervise it's cocaine operation and establish the place as a safe haven for corporate interests.

The agreement with Columbia isn't insignificant. It will allow the US military to use seven existing military bases. The plan calls for capping deployment at 800 personnel but we all know what that means - there's going to be an unlimited number of "advisors" and mercenaries pouring into the country and a massive equipment transfer. Columbia is already the third largest recipient of American military assistance in the world. Thousands in it's military were trained at the infamous School of the Americas, to get expertise in such areas as murder, torture, drug running and rape. It doesn't matter what kind of administration there is here in this country, the agenda is the same. Clinton increased military aid to the country by over twenty times in just two years, during The Bush mob years and now with Obama it increased a hundredfold. Oh the fascists have big plans for Columbia.
