The federal gov't has been playing that game for years. The FDA once had strict limits on the amount of mercury allowable in fish. But Bumblebee Tuna and Chicken-of-the-Sea started complaining that they couldn't find tuna that weren't overflowing from the gills with mercury. So the FDA just jacked up the limit. As a result, people are now advised not to feed their children more than one tunafish sandwich a week or they'll get permanent brain damage.
Oh no! My diet has been mainly fish and roadkill. From now on, only roadkill.
