Record drug haul unearthed in Taliban trenches
"THE world's biggest drug bust has been executed by narcotics agents in Afghanistan, who say they uncovered 236 tonnes of hashish hidden in trenches in the south of the country.The massive haul, found in the southern province of Kandahar on Monday, was worth more than $US400 million ($426 million) and would have netted the Taliban about $US14 million in profits, NATO officials said yesterday.
It weighed as much as 30 double-decker London buses.
"To our knowledge, this was the biggest drug seizure in the world," said Afghanistan's deputy interior minister Abdul Hadi Khalid. He said the drugs were found hidden in multiple trenches and that all 236.8 tonnes were burned in the trenches later the same day."
My guess is that this is complete nonsense, a made up tale concocted to counter eye witness reports of smuggling by american and British military.
There's so much wrong with it that it'll probably be exposed as propaganda very soon. For one thing the news reports quote all different numbers like 236 tons in this story, 260 tons and 237 tons. It can't be just a run of the mill bust, it has to be The Biggest Drug Siezure In History, to be sure to grab the headlines. The few pictures available just show a hole in the ground and some different types of bags, which are probably whatever they had laying around and filled with sand. IMO, any operation of this size would have standard bags for quality control and wouldn't have their multi million dollar product on the floor of a shallow trench. Isn't that sombody's pillowcase down there?
What also makes the bullshitometer quiver is that hash isn't the money crop in Afghanistan, it's opium that's turned into heroin. This trumped up bust, even if it's real, would be just a teeny drop in the bucket as far as smuggling goes in that country. The big boys are probably laughing themselves silly.
So where's the evidence? The RAF says it blew it all up. Nice of the smugglers to leave their dope out in the country in shallow trenches to be easily bombed. Also, blowing up over two hundred tons of tightly packed hashish would ensure that everybody in the province would get some, as this vintage video from an Oregon beach would suggest.

Damn shame if it is true, another terrible waste of a wonderful and highly disunderstood medicine.
It really irks me that the US-DEA thinks it can go around the world telling everybody everywhere what they can and can't consume. Furkin fascist imperialist bastards!
