Winter Storms Are Smacking The West Coast

High wind, blizzard and flood warnings from Washington to California today - goodbye electricity.

"Jan. 4 (Bloomberg) -- California is in the middle of a series of storms, the worst in a half-century, that may bring hurricane-strength winds, mudslides and as much as 10 feet (3 meters) of snow.
At least two storms have begun battering the West Coast, from Washington state to Southern California. The first brought as much as 2 inches (5 centimeters) of rain to some areas yesterday, and the second will bring more intense weather today, according to the U.S. National Weather Service.
Behind the first front, ``a yet even stronger storm is developing,'' the weather service's San Francisco office wrote on its Web site. ``The strong winds currently ongoing will remain and actually increase to high wind warning levels,'' or 25 to 45 miles an hour (40 to 72 kilometers an hour) with gusts to 60 mph.
A high-surf advisory is in effect until 10 a.m. Jan. 6, with possible swells of 28 feet this weekend, according to the weather service.
In the Sierra Nevada, winds could hit 100 mph today, and snowfall could reach 8 feet or more, private forecaster AccuWeather said on its Web site."

You're right. I lived there for 40 years, mostly in places with overhead power lines. Those will go out first.
It's always fun to build a big fire in the fireplace though, which becomes a rare opportunity to roast marshmallows, and most folks in my neighborhood had butane lanterns outside so they could see as they bbq'd dinner. Heat is normally gas so that was not a big deal. What sucked was the lack of TV. Another thing that sucked was the street lights being out and the road floods. Those were mostly due to poorly maintained drainage systems and a general deterioration of the infrastructure. All in all, nothing new for those in central cal.

Contrary to where my blog says I live, currently here in the pacific northwest it's storming like hell with ferocious winds and I expect the power to go out any moment. I imagine Cal is faring much, much worse with this.
