the shocking display
"...in a fight reminiscent of the brouhaha over an anti-Bush statement by Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks in 2003, a team of women who represented the United States at the world bridge championships in Shanghai last month is facing sanctions, including a yearlong ban from competition, for a spur-of-the-moment protest."

David L. Anderson, a bridge player who supports the team, said it was common to see players at international tournaments sporting buttons bearing the date “1-20-09,” when George W. Bush will hand off to a new president, as well as buttons reading “Support Our Troops.”
“They don’t go after those people,” Mr. Anderson said.
Double standards, as usual.
It's okay for Americans overseas at such events to say they support the super-chimp and self-proclaimed emperor of the so-called free world, but it's not okay for Americans to say they don't support the fascist pretzeldunce.
It would be best to add, under such signs, in future events, "But WE DO SUPPORT FREE SPEECH!"
Well put. They should put aside those half assed hypocritical excuses that "oh this isn't a political event" and the cherry picking of who can or can't make a statement. It makes them look quite stupid.
On second thought, protest away.
