Just in the last few days a decent, although not 3D, version of this movie showed up online.
I had been looking forward to seeing this flick for two reasons. When I was a kid I read all of Edgar Rice Burroughs' novels and was entranced by the stories of a guy transported to mars and his exploits. Also I do have great respect for Richard Hoagland and heard him tout the movie on Coast to Coast AM as being a daring expose of some sort.
Unfortunately it sucks.
Like too many movies these days it's a CGI fest for kiddies. Let me just state it bluntly. We're being dumbed down in this society because our overlords need a few toilet cleaners that are just smart enough to clean toilets but not clever enough to grasp what's going on. Ever wonder why people graduate high school or even college and can't read well? It's meant to be that way.
The same thing with cinema. This Carter movie, probably even in 3D mode, is a disgusting insult to the novels, not an homage. It's a disservice, period. If you like Marvel adaptations, plenty of CGI, lots of kiddie stuff and explosions then John Carter is going to be right up your alley.
Hoagland has been a groundbreaking author who blew the lid off a lot of NASA's idiocy. His research has always been enjoyable to keep up with because the guy was never afraid to go out on a limb.
But a couple of days ago he lauded "John Carter" as a tremendously wonderful cinematic success. Apparently the reason for doing so was for self aggrandization because of his work about mars, because the movie is a muddled mess that lives down to it's lousy reviews. Never even bothered to finish the thing which is a rarity for me to do.

Well said. I thought EXACTLY the same thing about the movie and couldn't finish it either. I really think Hoagland's lost/losing it.
Yes MS the movie really turned very stupid right off the bat. Going into it I thought the premise of a Civil War vet on Mars would be an enjoyable romp but holy idiocy, how they could immediately ruin Burroughs' tale was an amazing display of very bad movie making.
