Still Protecting Their Turf While Rome Burns

Feds assume control of Bastrop County fire; volunteer firemen turned away

"Bastrop, Texas: Firefighting-trained volunteers from around the state converged on Bastrop and Smithville Tuesday to lend a hand to the beleaguered local firefighters battling the Bastrop County Complex Fire - only to be sent away as federal officials arrived at the scene and took command, apparently because local officials never made a formal request for volunteers.

"We were at the station getting set up into strike teams, and this guy came up and said that the U.S. Forest Service had 'assumed control of the situation, and that 'If you don't have a vehicle that squirts water, go home,'" said Gordon Greer of Kirbyville, who drove all night Monday to arrive in the town beset by the worst wildfire in Texas history. "You've got guys who had driven all night long from Corpus Christi and Brownsville on their own dime, and they turned them away. He was really a (bleep) about it."

A contract fire fighting outfit source up in Montana sent this to George Ure at Urban Survival:

"All the Texas fires have been the same...'Federal Only. No Contractors'. You'll see on the Bastrop fire they are ordering Type 2 water tenders, again Federal Only. We have 2 Type 1 tenders sitting here idle in Montana. They are 6,000 gallons and 5,600 gallons, can pump and draft simultaneously and can support helicopters. Type 2 Tenders are less than 4,000 gallons, usually much less. Of course we're contractors, so no calls even with a national contract. What a shame available resources are left sitting while people and property are lost."

flashback - Castro offers to send 1100 Cuban doctors to help Katrina victims

"HAVANA – Cuban President Fidel Castro has offered to send 100 doctors to Houston immediately to help provide medical care to residents of New Orleans who have been evacuated in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
Another 500 clinicians and specialists could be dispatched to Houston β€œor any other airport of your choosing,” by Sunday, Castro said during a TV Roundtable discussion broadcast in Havana with another 500 to follow."

US tells Cubans to fuck off
"The White House snubbed Cuba's offer and said Castro would do better "freeing" his Communist-run country."
