Europe's Very Own Extinction Event

Toxic sludge threatens drinking water for millions

"The toxic sludge, which has now entered the Danube River in Hungary, threatens the drinking water supply for millions of people, across Europe, says Payal Sampat, the international campaign director of Earthworks, an environmental organization that focuses on mining.
"It's a toxic soup, full of chemicals used to process aluminum," she says. The sludge contains chemicals such as cadmium and lead.
The Danube River runs through four European capitals and makes up the border for 10 countries.
The sludge could enter groundwater supplies and underground reservoirs, Sampat says. The total amount of toxic red sludge spilled is about 185 million gallons, and weighs millions of tons.
The accident killed four people and injured at least 120 others and has covered an area of about 15 square miles.
Since it has a very high pH level, the sludge is very alkaline and causes severe burns when it comes into contact with people or animals. "The people who died were burned to death," Sampat says."

But the dripping, smiling chamber of commerce slugs are everywhere these days.

Are Hungarian Officials Downplaying Toxic Sludge's Impact?

"Hungarian officials may be downplaying the overall severity of Monday's enormous toxic sludge spill out of fear of its effect on tourism and agricultural exports, scientists and environmentalists said today."
