Taliban Rule

Not saying religious fanatics are preferable to invasion and occupation by a foreign power. But all things are relative and a lot of the bad press , shall we say, may be "invention". After all, empire will always demonize the brown skinned people they need to kill.

Roads were safer in Afghanistan under the Taliban, British general admits

"Major-General Nick Carter, who leads Nato forces in the south of the troubled country, said that, before the 2001 invasion, young women could travel alone between major cities without risk of harm.
He said: "The difference, I think we need to be clear, is that when the Taliban were here they did ensure security on the main highways and they did it very effectively."

Life under the Taliban

"...at the time that they took over Kabul — in September 1996 — the majority of the capital’s residents hailed them as saviors.
What preceded the Taliban was far worse than the loss of music and kite-flying privileges: Kabul dwellers had spent four years in the grip of a vicious civil war that had destroyed the city, killed thousands of people and sent even more into exile."

The Women of Afghanistan Under the Taliban - book at Amazon, reader comment

"The book is extremely useful in that it does not focus solely upon the Taliban as the source for gender inequalities in Afghanistan. Rather it notes the many political motives behind it, as well as cultural and social pressures. Moreover, it succeeds in showing that it is not Islam that renders the oppression of women as justifiable. Instead, it shows the many intertwining forces within Afghani culture and politics that are in fact to blame. It is for this reason that this book deserves much attention. The American media too often portrays, or simplifies, the oppression of Afghani women into a phenomenon stemming from the Taliban and Islamic fundamentalism. The fact that the chauvinistic mindset pervades, and has existed within, Afghani society is often overlooked."

Occupation Stooge Dismisses Taliban Schools Initiative

"January 22, 2007 -- Afghan Education Minister Mohammad Hanif Atmar today dismissed a purported plan by Taliban insurgents to open schools in areas they control, and said the government will never allow it."

"merely a business agreement"

"Numerous reports over the past two weeks have confirmed that the U.S. military is paying off the Taliban with bags of gold to prevent them from attacking vehicle convoys, proving that there is no real “war” in Afghanistan, merely a business agreement that allows the occupiers to continue their lucrative control of record opium exports while they finalize construction of dozens of new military bases from which to launch new wars."

You should add to this the well-known fact (all the way up to the high US command level) that most of Afghans after been train and supplied by US tax money will use the first chance to desert and join Taliban.
Taliban right now use the weapons left behind by Russians. This was the major mistake made by Russians because all of the Afghans trained by Russians end up on the other side.
Now it's the same story again.
