How Bad Is It?

Unemployment In Detroit At 50% - Analysis shows reported jobless rate understates extent of problem

"Despite an official unemployment rate of 27 percent, the real jobs problem in Detroit may be affecting half of the working-age population, thousands of whom either can't find a job or are working fewer hours than they want.
Using a broader definition of unemployment, as much as 45 percent of the labor force has been affected by the downturn.
And that doesn't include those who gave up the job search more than a year ago, a number that could exceed 100,000 potential workers alone."

Banks Get into the Unemployment Biz, and Quickly Start the Rip-offs

"As states pay unemployment benefits with bank debit cards, the jobless are seeing their fees add up."

$57,077.60 -- That's What We're Paying Each Minute for the Occupation of Afghanistan

"The $30 billion cost of Obama's surge alone would place the US in the top-ten for global military spending, sandwiched between Italy and Saudi Arabia."

when i first filed for u/e, the state automatically issued me one of those damn debit cards (via u.s. bank). i immediately switched to direct deposit and tried to close the card account. i spent weeks being shuffled back and forth between the employ dept and u.s. bank--both saying "we can't close the account. only the emp dept/us bank can." fuckers. i was eventually told "just let it expire", which i did, only to receive a new card in the mail. i called the u/e office--spoke to the person in charge of these damn card--and she said she would take care of it. as of today, i don't know if it's been closed up. i didn't follow up as i no longer care (just like i don't give a squat what my credit score is). these cards are all a scam to give the banks more $. it has nothing to do w/convenience (obviously).
