Steel Beam Returns to NYC's Ground Zero

Dubbed the "Last Column," it became the final standing steel column removed from ground zero, and a steel canvas for tributes from recovery workers and victims' families.
It was adorned with firehouse patches, police logos and union stickers, and spray-painted with the shorthand messages "PAPD 37," "NYPD 23," and "FDNY 343" in honor of Port Authority and city police officers and firefighters who died in the 2001 attacks.
It was cut down, wrapped in black muslin and an American flag, and taken out as part of a ceremony marking the end of recovery efforts on May 30, 2002."
It's that last sentence which blows this attempt to yank your emotional chains. What began immediately after 9/11 wasn't a recovery effort but a massive crime scene coverup. Mayor Giuliani, himself a corrupt sleazeball despite a huge PR campaign to turn him into a modern day saint, ordered the trade center steel stored under guard at the Fresh Kills Landfill on Staten Island and instead of preserving it for thorough examination had it sent to China and India to be immediately melted down.
You're not supposed to know what happened that day. You're only supposed to believe the lies and shed a tear with these tawdry sentimental displays designed to immortalize the bullshit myths.
