39 Years Ago Today

KSU Rare Audio Recording from May 4th 1970 - 12:24pm

When the Kent State shootings happened, hundreds of universities across the country were taken over by students and shut down. I'm proud to say I was part of the student body at my college that refused to allow business as usual. We took over the administration building and kept the staff out for several days. The Black Panthers took over the student union and it's cafeteria and sent food and drinks over to us.

When I started to view this article I was trying to think 39 years ago-hmmmm-I forgot about this little fascistic piece of American history-the more I research into our background as a nation the more I wonder-"to what degree were we ever a representative republic in the first place?" thanks again for all of your hard work-best to all of you!!

It was the waning days of a fascinating time. We still had the vestiges of optimism and thought direct action could have positive effects, Devin. We were college students just like the kids who were shot and killed at Kent, and the Vietnam draft was an immediate and ugly thing in our lives. Anybody with a conscience had to take a stand and make a statement and I'm glad I was a part of that.
