Out Of Iraq, Out Of Recession

Probably not, but it would help. Funny how respondents see through the Bushista "rebate stimulus" grandstanding garbage and rank it lowest in terms of effectiveness. The average american is smarter than Dim Son and his Keystone Kops Kabal.

AP Poll: Leaving Iraq will help economy
"The heck with Congress' big stimulus bill. The way to get the country out of recession — and most people think we're in one — is to get the country out of Iraq, according to an Associated Press-Ipsos poll.
Pulling out of the war ranked first among proposed remedies in the survey, followed by spending more on domestic programs, cutting taxes and, at the bottom end, giving rebates to poor people in hopes they'll spend the economy into recovery."

Want a good indication just how bad the economic storm really is?

Holiday gift cards pay for basic necessities
"NEW YORK — Here's a sign of how shaky the economy has become: Wal-Mart says its shoppers are redeeming their holiday gift cards for basic items — pasta sauce, diapers, laundry detergent — instead of iPods or DVDs.
Merchants had hoped shoppers armed with gift cards would provide a lift after a dismal holiday shopping season — partly because shoppers tend to spend even more than the value of the card. But that didn't seem to happen last month, and retailers are feeling the pain.

(...)
Even at department stores, he said, consumers are using gift cards to buy basic apparel such as socks and lingerie.
The assessment by Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world's largest retailer, that gift card redemptions were below expectations and people were buying only necessities shook up industry observers
."

And yes, the "rebate stimulus" is a huge swindle, not a rebate but is a loan, a refund advance that you'll have to pay back next year.
Funny thing, too about these un-asked for checks and the timing. The amount of money is just about the same as a certain bank loss, and since most people plan on paying their creditors you have to wonder about the real reason for this shit. And good luck to the millions of people who count on it but won't get any taxes back in 2009.
It’s a good thing, but it’s not enough to head off recession. We’re talking about $150 billion, so this roughly offsets what the banks have lost” in soured housing investments."

True, the "stimulus program" may not be very effective, but an election-year giveaway is pretty hard for the pols to resist.

You see the whole thing isn't a giveaway, abi. They're forcing you to take out a loan that youhave to pay back next year. Now all those people who mark 0 exemptions on their W4 forms at work and have exactly the right amount of taxes taken out of their paychecks will all of a sudden have to pay this un-asked for loan back in 2009. I guarantee you millions won't be able to pay back this forced loan. Since most people are going to pay their credit cards, it's being done to bail out the banks.
Any pol who willingly does this should be in prison.

I don't think the money has to be claimed on federal taxes next year. States may tax it, though.
