Duct Tape and Cover

Gotta get em young.
Fear works wonders if you want to manipulate. Under the guise of preperation and readiness, in typical nanny state style, our nascent fascism is promoting fear and aiming it straight at our children. The good news is that it's high comedy.

"Disaster . . . it can happen anywhere,But we've got a few tips, so you can be preparedFor floods, tornadoes, or even a 'quake,You've got to be ready - so your heart don't break.
Disaster prep is your responsibilityAnd mitigation is important to our agency.
People helping people is what we doAnd FEMA is there to help see you throughWhen disaster strikes, we are at our bestBut we're ready all the time, 'cause disasters don't rest!"

Whew. I know that when the next hurricane hits everything is going to go just fine.

At this site - http://www.ready.gov/kids/home.html Fema has a spiffy mountain lion family with a buff feline Indiana Jones in charge. Personally I prefer old Bert the Turtle, as in this updated version of fearmongering-

“The problem lay buried, unspoken for many years in the minds of American women. It was a strange stirring, a sense of dissatisfaction, a yearning that women suffered in the middle of the twentieth century in the United States. Each suburban housewife struggled with it alone. As she made the beds, shopped for groceries, matched slipcover material, ate peanut butter sandwiches with her children, chauffeured Cub Scouts and Brownies, lay beside her husband at night, she was afraid to ask even of herself the silent question: ''Is this all?''”

I was watching the Lewis Black comedy special for probably the 3rd time the other night. He has this skit about how he thinks of the people who tell him duct tape can protect against a chemical attack in the same way he thinks of the people who told him hiding under his desk as a child would save him from a nuclear attack. He says the only way duct tape will save you from a chemical attack is if you put it over your mouth and nose and smother yourself to death before the chemicals can kill you. It is a much longer and funnier skit, but you get the idea.

Yes, it always amazed me too that anyone would fall for that stuff these days.

I'm old enough to have done those original duck and cover drills and even back then it seemed silly and useless.
