Back then I lived up in the pacific NW. I worked with a guy who's wife was active in the hierarchy of the local republican machine. She told me that when this running joke was going to stump in the town we lived in, that I and about 25 other locals were probably going to be visited and held during his visit, presumably by the secret service, because we were deemed an active threat.
Reason? I sent political letters to the local newspaper.
He never bothered to show up, actually.
