Japanese 'plant factory' churn out immaculate vegetables
"They look more like the brightly lit shelves of a chemists shop than the rows of a vegetable garden.
But according to their creators, these perfect looking vegetables could be the future of food.
In a perfectly controlled and totally sterile environment - uncontaminated by dirt, insects or fresh air - Japanese scientists are developing a new way of growing vegetables."

"Because the plants are grown in a clean room, they can be eaten safely without washing. Lettuce grown in the factories can be cropped up to 20 times a year.
Some factories are vast - and can produce three million vegetables a year.
The results are hygienic, but it's about as far from real food as you can possibly get."
No, thank you. I prefer the real dirty fingernail stuff, bugs included that let me know the nutritional food I eat isn't drenched in chemicals. I'm always happy to see those worms that live in and eat the corn tassels, they don;t bother much of the cob but let you know the corn is going to be good for you.

i'm with you. i want the dirt and the beneficial bugs and worms.
however, if the air were to become too toxic to grow food, such an environment would have its purpose...in so long as there is no toxic crap put into the foods to make them so gosh darn pretty.
'They can be eaten without washing'
If you grow vegetables in your back garden, patio or allotment you know where they come from and that they were definitely grown organically. I can eat my lettuce without washing as well as my carrots, potatoes and cabbages (well after I've picked the slugs off). This is exactly why I got into vegetable growing, but it is scary to think its going all clinical.
