We Have To Confront The Real Reasons

We must. This article goes the way of most pieces on this terrible problem in that it blames the VA for inadequate care. That's one aspect about the suicide epidemic for sure but it doesn't get to the root of the matter - the policies that led to what these people did that destroyed their lives have to be completely changed.
Their "mental illness" is a direct result of being forced to be the bad guys and they won't live any more with that.

Desperate veterans turn to suicide

"Several branches of the military are reporting significant spikes in the number of suicides committed by both active-duty troops and veterans returning from duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. Experts are calling the number of military-related suicides sweeping the country an "epidemic."

Survivors of veterans who committed suicide are starting to file lawsuits, accusing the VA of medical malpractice. The agency also has come under attack by lawmakers and veterans' groups charging that it failed to treat injured veterans for post-traumatic stress disorder or traumatic brain injury, the signature wounds of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. The agency also has been accused of manipulating suicide statistics to downplay the problem and systematically misdiagnosing returning combat soldiers who suffer mental illness because their resources are tapped."

Thats a very good point you make, nolocontendere. Most U.S. soldiers naively went to Iraq actually believing they were doing good, only to realize they were playing the same role as the WW2 Waffen SS. And the disillusionment upon coming to this realization was obviously too much for many of them to take. I blame the media above all else, for not depicting the U.S. for what it really is years ago - an empire. And for not pointing out a universal fact of empires - that they are inherently evil. Maybe a lot fewer idealistic people would have joined the military if they had known that.

While I believe that analysis of vets realizing their idealism was being channelled into sadistic vandalism and murder likely true, I do recall other stories about common DVA-precribed drugs being suicide inducing !
